Slow computers are better than fast computers ============================================= [Published: 2022-04-29] Advantages of fast computers: - They give you a faster experience when running some software. Advantages of slow computers: - They use less energy, which means: - Less energy cost. - Less environmental problems. - Less heat emission, which means: - They don't need fans, which means: - They can be silent. - They have fewer moving parts that can break. - No dust that gets stuck. - Longer battery life, if you use battery. - They can be smaller, which means: - They fit everywhere. - They are lighter and more portable. - They use less material when manufactured, which means: - They are cheaper. - Less environmental problems. - More freedom with other choices since you are less constrained by the speed requirement. So why do people buy fast computers? Is it because it's that important to run software fast? If that's the reason, then why don't we spend more time making the software fast instead so it runs fast on all computers and not only the fast ones? It would be better for the user if we tried to make the software fast more than the hardware because then the user can get the benefits from having a slow computer while still having a fast experience. All a fast computer does is to hide the slowness of the software. It makes no sense for a programmer to use a fast computer since their job is to fix the slowness of the software. Don't hide the problem you're supposed to fix.
